Why does laser eye surgery cost as much as it does?

Even though LASIK is a quick surgical procedure, lasting about 15 minutes, many wonder how much does laser eye surgery really cost. Below are the key factors that influence the overall price.

Investment in Advanced Diagnostics

A modern laser eye clinic like Focus Vision invests heavily in advanced diagnostic tools to protect your eye health. Our diagnostic equipment alone is valued at over $700,000, ensuring we deliver the safest and most accurate laser eye procedures. We also include follow up care after eye surgery.

High-Tech Laser Equipment

LASIK and PRK eye surgery require multiple lasers. A femtosecond laser can cost up to $1 million and incurs use fees of $450–$600 per eye. Excimer lasers used for reshaping corneal tissue add another $400,000–$800,000 in equipment costs. We use the latest technology to ensure premium results and no hidden costs.

The Laser Environment

Maintaining these devices requires a stable operating environment. Our purpose-built theatre, in a private day hospital, ensures the correct humidity and temperature. This investment in the right environment and theatre fees plays a crucial role in ensuring optimal outcomes for your eye laser surgery.

Surgeon's Expertise

Becoming a qualified laser eye surgeon in Australia involves about 15 years of training. Our team includes corneal subspecialists who have undergone overseas fellowships. Surgeon experience and surgeon's skill directly impact the results of your laser treatment.

Operational Costs

Running a world-class laser refractive surgery clinic involves ongoing expenses, including premises, highly trained staff, insurance, and more.

Whether you choose LASIK, PRK, or cataract treatment, our packages include all consultations, eye drops, surgical techniques, and follow-up care. Frequently Asked Questions about Costs:

How much does laser eye surgery cost at Focus Vision in Brisbane in 2026?

Focus Vision's 2026 all-inclusive laser eye surgery prices are: TransPRK from $3,500 per eye ($34/week); LASIK and Ray Tracing LASIK from $4,250 per eye ($41/week); CLEAR/SMILE lenticule extraction from $4,250 per eye ($41/week); ICL surgery from $7,000 per eye including anaesthetist ($68/week); Refractive Lens Exchange from $6,000 per eye including anaesthetist ($58/week). All prices include pre-operative assessments, the procedure, and one year of follow-up appointments. We do not charge more for higher prescriptions.

Why does laser eye surgery cost so much?

The cost reflects the $2M+ investment in hospital-grade diagnostic and laser technology, combined with high per-eye licensing fees and the safety standards of an accredited private day hospital. Our all-inclusive pricing ensures patients face no hidden fees for high prescriptions or aftercare.

Is Focus Vision cheaper than other laser eye surgery clinics in Brisbane?

On a like-for-like comparison, Focus Vision is competitively priced and in several procedures meaningfully less expensive than competitors when all fees are included. For ICL surgery: Focus Vision charges $7,000 per eye including the anaesthetist — VSON charges $7,262.40 per eye not including the anaesthetist. For CLEAR/SMILE: Focus Vision charges $4,250 per eye — VSON charges $5,183.74 per eye. For LASIK: $4,250 at Focus Vision versus $4,712.49 at VSON. A full comparison table is published on our Costs page and updated regularly.

Can I pay for laser eye surgery in instalments?

Yes. Focus Vision offers 24-month interest-free payment plans for all elective procedures. The weekly repayments are: TransPRK from $34/week; LASIK and CLEAR from $41/week; ICL from $68/week; RLE from $58/week. Please speak to our team at your free assessment for details on financing options and eligibility.

Does private health insurance cover laser eye surgery in Australia?

Standard elective laser vision correction (LASIK, TransPRK, CLEAR/SMILE, ICL for refractive purposes) is not covered by Medicare. However, some private health fund extras policies may contribute to laser vision correction — particularly BUPA, Medibank Private, Navy Health, and Defence Health. For cataract surgery and clinically indicated pterygium removal, Medicare and private health hospital cover do apply. Our team will check your specific entitlements as part of your free assessment.

Are Focus Vision's prices all-inclusive or are there hidden extras?

Focus Vision's prices are fully all-inclusive. Your quoted price covers: all pre-operative assessments and eye measurements, the surgical procedure itself, the intraocular or corneal lens where applicable, hospital and theatre fees, anaesthetist fees (for ICL, RLE, and cataract surgery), all prescribed eye drops for the post-operative period, and all follow-up appointments for one full year. We do not charge more for higher prescriptions, and we do not charge more for choosing the most advanced technology within a procedure category.

Is laser eye surgery a good investment?

The average Australian spends $500–$1,000 or more annually on glasses, contact lenses, and solutions — $10,000 to $20,000 over 20 years. Laser eye surgery eliminates or dramatically reduces this ongoing cost. Most patients also report significant improvements in quality of life, confidence, and daily freedom beyond the financial calculation.
