Who is usually suitable?
Most people considering laser vision correction are good candidates — the essentials are being at least 18 years old (implantable contact lenses require a minimum age of 21), a prescription that has stayed stable for at least a year, and healthy eyes. LASIK, PRK and CLEAR are generally most effective for mild to moderate short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.
What can affect suitability?
A few things can rule laser surgery out — or point you toward a different procedure:
- Dry eyes — a pre-existing dry eye condition can worsen after surgery, so it needs treating first.
- Pregnancy — hormonal changes can temporarily shift your vision, making surgery less predictable.
- Thin or irregular corneas — these may rule out LASIK specifically, while other procedures remain possible.
- Very high prescriptions — extremely strong prescriptions may not be fully correctable with a laser.
- Eye health — conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts change which procedure is right.
If laser isn't the right fit
Not qualifying for laser surgery rarely means nothing can be done. An Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) corrects high prescriptions without touching the cornea, and Refractive Lens Exchange suits age-related lens changes and reading-glasses frustration. Our surgeons will recommend the pathway that fits your eyes, not the other way around.
What happens after the test?
Your answers go to the Focus Vision team, who will review them and email you — usually within 15 minutes during business hours. The questionnaire is an initial screen, not a clinical assessment or diagnosis. You can then book a free optometrist assessment. Every patient proceeding to surgery has a paid specialist surgeon consultation to confirm suitability and plan the procedure.
